Peony Tips & Tricks and New Calyx Peony Subscription
Peony season is just around the corner here in Red Deer, AB and few flowers generate more anticipation at Calyx Floral Design than these big beauties. A bloom beloved for both its fleeting nature and unmistakable elegance. Their limited availability makes them especially sought after, adding to their appeal.
As they open, peonies transform from tight buds into expansive, layered blooms. Each petal unfurls gradually, creating a soft, cloud like form with remarkable depth. Their fragrance feels equally indulgent, offering a light, romantic scent that enhances their overall experience.
Most commonly peonies appear in white, blush, pink tones alongside rich reds. However, at a premium price, newer varieties have gained attention, including buttery yellow, muted apricot, and variegated varieties that shift in colour. Some varieties, like coral charm, for example, will change as they mature opening with a vivid coral and fades gradually to a soft blush. An exquisite colour evolution to observe!
In terms of design versatility, peonies hold their own alone, or in company. A mono botanical peony bouquet needs nothing added to feel complete. They also pair effortlessly with other soft, romantic blooms such as hydrangea, viburnum, roses, ranunculus or astilbe for arrangements with greater textural depth.
Peonies are reliably available from April through late June. Their sweet spot (best quality and most accessible pricing) runs from the last 2 weeks of May through to the first 2 weeks of June, where they are typically are around $8/stem for common varieties. Outside of peak season, peonies can be sourced from Dutch growers in November, December and February. However, availability cannot be guaranteed, and price rises considerably to $15-20 or more per stem.
Ultimately, peonies offer more than visual impact. Their brief season, evolving form and gentle fragrance create a floral experience that feels both exceptional and memorable.
PEONY TIPS & TRICKS
Peonies are generous bloomers, but they do have requirements to perform their best. Their typical vase life runs approximately 5-7 days, fortunately a few tricks can make a significant difference in how long they last.
Start with clean water. Peonies are thirsty, clean water is essential from the start. Begin by sanitizing your vessel, using a mild bleach solution to remove bacteria. Next remove any foliage that would sit below the waterline, as debris encourages bacterial growth. Cut each stem at an angle using sharp knife or clippers. Cutting at an angle increases the surface area for improved water absorption. Avoid using scissors or dull tools, which can crush the stems. Shortly after being cut, the stems will seal themselves, like a scab, so it is important to place them in water within a minute of being cut. Refresh the water every 1-2 days, recutting (approximately 1″) stems each time.
Harvesting peonies yourself? Timing is key. The ideal stage is known as the “marshmallow” phase, when buds feel soft, but before they have opened. Cutting when the buds are too tight may prevent blooming entirely. At this soft stage, after cutting you can firmly tap the stems to remove any ants before bringing them inside.
To encourage faster blooming, place peonies in a warmer environment and use lukewarm water after recutting. You can repeat this process until they reach the desired stage.
To slow things down, store buds at the marshmallow stage wrapped in newspaper, sealed in a plastic bag and refrigerated between 0-3°C for up to 3-6 weeks. They may look deflated when removed, but a fresh cut into lukewarm water should revive them within a few hours.
Two final tips: keep arrangement away from fruit, particularly bananas, which release ethylene gas that accelerates wilting. And if a peony begins to droop prematurely, submerge the entire stem in lukewarm water for 30-60 minutes – it works more often than you’d expect!
With thought and care, peonies reward you with a gradual, unfolding display that invites you to slow down and savour each stage of their beauty.

Beginning April 22nd, our peony subscription delivers a fresh, hand-tied bouquet of seasonal peonies directly to your door, gathered at peak bloom and made to order each week. Subscribers choose from 3 sizes to suit their spaces and budgets:
Small – 5 stems, $300
Medium – 10 stems, $600

The subscription price covers all six bouquets in full. A single delivery fee and applicable taxes are added at checkout as a one time charge, covering the entire 6 week period.
Deliveries arrive every Wednesday from April 22 through May 27th, creating a weekly rhythm that makes the middle of the week genuinely worth anticipating.
