Tips For Planning Wedding Flowers
It is an exciting time of year, as many couples get engaged over Christmas/New Years. The magic of the season, trips to exotic locations and/or being surrounded by loved ones make it a special time to pop the big question. Wedding planning can be a very exciting time, but it can also feel overwhelming. There are so many decisions to be made and details to consider – it can be hard to know where to start to start and how to make your vision a reality.
Occasionally we have brides reaching out very early in the planning stages, eager to plan out their flowers. While we do find this incredibly flattering that ya’ll are so excited to work with us it is often best to wait until you have a few other details sorted out first. This will help the process run as smoothly and as efficiently as possible both for us the florist and you the bride as we know your time is valuable! Some things you will want to know before meeting with a florist include:
DATE
To ensure all our brides get handled with the best care possible, we are careful not to over book weekends. As a result, we do have some weekends that fill up. Also, as many of you know there are a number of flowers that are seasonal so your date will impact what product is available to us for your flowers.
BUDGET
Budgets aren’t the most fun thing to discuss, but it is important to us that we have an understanding of what yours is. We want to be respectful and stay within your budget if possible. We would try to stick to design ideas that work with your budget, may need to tweak some of your plans to accommodate your budget.
VENUE
Preferably for both ceremony and reception. Different venues may have different things for us to keep in mind for the designs we plan out. Even the difference of whether your reception space will be using long rectangular tables or round ones – as it would impact the design plans for the centrepieces.
COLOUR PALETTE/VIBE
The types of flowers, colours and style of designs we create for your wedding do have a big impact for the look and feel. We want to make sure what we are planning will align with your vision, so it is important for us to know what that looks like for you when you come in for a consultation.
DRESS
This one is less necessary, we can definitely plan out your flowers if you haven’t picked out your dress, but it is certainly helpful as it can impact what type of a bouquet you carry. If you fall in love with a super ornate gown, you may opt to stick to a simple bouquet to not take away from your dress.
NEXT STEPS
A couple quick notes, while you may not have the above all sorted out, it doesn’t mean you can’t start dreaming. A great place to start is a Pinterest board. It is a very easy way to organize your ideas and vision and will be helpful in the consultation process!
Also, while it is helpful to have all those planned, we do understand that at times plans change and we are of course able to accommodate shifts in the plan as needed! These are guidelines, not strict rules and are meant to just keep the planning process as easy as possible!
Once you have the above items decided and you are ready to start chatting about flowers – you can start the process by filling out the pre-consultation form on our website. It is quick and easy to do. Our team members will confirm that we are available, before reaching out with an email with options for whether you would prefer in person or zoom consultation as well as dates/times that you can pick from.
During the consultation we will go over your floral plans in detail. Mapping out what your floral needs are, your preferred flowers, the look you are going for, discussing whether delivery or set up with be required etc. Based on the consultation, a quote will be designed for you, broken down in detail which will be emailed to you.
Again, it is not uncommon that plans do require adjustments. Your quote will simply be adjusted along the way to stay updated! If you are ready to move forward, a deposit will be required to secure your date and you will officially be a Calyx Couple!
HOW A WEDDING PLANNER CAN ASSIST YOU
While we are discussing wedding planning, we would be remiss to not discuss the benefit of hiring a wedding planner. Wedding planners are super knowledgeable and can be incredibly helpful during the planning process.
- They have experience to know what things work, what doesn’t, what requires extra considerations and what those considerations are etc.
- It can be hard to know the timeline of what needs to be tackled when, and a planner can really help take the guesswork out, making the list of decisions less daunting.
- With their experience working, they most likely have some preferred vendors that they can recommend that should fit your budget, offer good quality product or service and be reliable.
- They can help bring together the different design elements in a way that creates a cohesive look, that can feel challenging or stressful to achieve on your own.
- Many planners also have services available to do the wedding set up, which is a huge amount of work off and stress off your plate
- If anything doesn’t go according to plan, as things sometimes do, a wedding planner is great at helping navigate that. Their experience will help keep the situation calm and create a plan of options to choose from moving forward.
If you are interested in going that route, here is a list of talented planners based in the Red Deer/Calgary area, though many are able to travel with their services.
